In January of 2009, Matt Alexander and Dr. Edward O’Bryan traveled to Masindi, Uganda to survey the potential site for a future clinic. They spent the majority of their time meeting with local government and church officials and visiting local hospitals and private clinics. Throughout their time in Masindi they were made keenly aware of the desperate need for quality medical care in the area. Professional photographer Joshua Drake also accompanied them to document this initial scouting trip.

In March of 2009, 26 people from Charleston, South Carolina traveled to Masindi, Uganda to participate in the first PMI medical clinic. The team consisted of providers, nurses, medical and pharmacy students. The team was able to treat over 1,100 patients over four days of clinic in Masindi and the outlying communities of Kisuuga and Kansongoire. The first medical trip was very successful and the beginning of a wonderful partnership between PMI and the people of Uganda.

PMI sponsored the Summer Medical Institute with MUSC Medical Campus Outreach trip to Masindi, Uganda in May 2009. The team consisted of over 50 medical students and 80 participants total and was able to treat over 2,200 patients in 8 days. In addition, the team filled over 5,000 prescriptions and distributed over 800 pairs of glasses! Finally, over the course of the trip, they were also able to witness three patients walk for the first time and see innumerable lives touched.

In December 2009, 26 PMI Volunteers traveled from Charleston to Masindi to provide quality medical care to the local people. The team was able to treat over 1,500 patients throughout 5 days of clinic and fill over 1,200 prescriptions. The trip also included another visit to Family Sprit Orphanage and Murchison Falls.
